What is the most common tropical vacation place for Americans?

Main Post:

Hawaii is probably the most known tropical island globally. Most people picture Hawaii, Maldives or the Caribbean when they think of the tropics.

The US owns a lot of tropical island territories like Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa and Virgin Islands. They also have very close ties to Central America and Caribbean + Pacific Islands. Looots of tropical places for Americans to choose from their own states to nearby places.

Top Comment: Florida, Hawaii, Mexico, or the Caribbean.

Cheap tropical vacation from the PNW?

Main Post:

I’m looking to get away from the Pacific Northwest (USA) weather this spring for my birthday. It would just be me (26f) and my boyfriend (28m). My birthday is mid-April so I’d go any time between March & May depending on the best price. I’m planning to go for 1 week and I could fly out of either Seattle or Portland.

Ideal destination features in order of importance:

  • Tropical/islands
  • Flights under/around $500 round-trip per person
  • Not crowded
  • Cheap food and/or accommodations

I went to the Bahamas (Nassau) last August and it was a fantastic vacation. There were plenty of accessible beaches and gorgeous weather. I spent most of my time snorkeling and having drinks with the locals. There were hardly any other tourists outside of the resort/cruise areas.

Paid activities don't matter to me. I mostly just want somewhere I can snorkel for free (e.g. by swimming 40 ft away from the beach like in Nassau). My boyfriend would probably want to explore some natural areas, maybe visit a museum, and eat some local cuisine. He hasn't traveled internationally so I think he'd be good with whatever.

I would just go back to the Bahamas or Mexico but I want to try a new country. I’ve also already been to Hawai’i. I may be open to visiting another Bahamian island if anyone has suggestions.

Top Comment: Puerto Rico! It's great that time of year weather-wise and can't beat the food/beaches, really easy to explore with a rental car especially to find less crowded beaches. Snorkeling can be had through most of the island or by ferry to nearby smaller islands. Heck, you could even hop a small place to St Thomas/St Johns for even better snorkel options but the food is better on PR.

Best cheap, relatively safe, beach/tropical destinations for solo traveler?

Main Post:

I have a trip planned for Rio in about a month but I am reconsidering it due to safety. For context; I am a 22f doing first time international solo travel. I am well traveled as is, but this would be my first trip alone. I speak just enough spanish to be able to get by in latin america.

Anyway, I'm looking for potential alternatives for travel as opposed to Rio. I am not open to going to mexico since l just came back from a trip there 2 months ago and I am not as open to costa rica because l've heard the food isn't that good lol. Ideally, I would like to not stick out like a sore thumb (brown skin, curly hair) the country should be safe enough for black people. I would also prefer a country with a good exchange rate for USD as I am planning to be gone for roughly 2 weeks. My goal is to lay on the beach all day, meet locals, eat good food, see some cool sites and stay safe lol. Some of the places I'm considering are as follows:

Cartagena, Colombia Dominican Republic (not punta cana) Spain, Portugal, Europe (?)

If you've visited any of these locations please feel free to share your experiences and some tips if you have any. Thank you!

Edit: I should mention that culture is an important part of travel for me. Also, emphasis on relatively cheap 😭🙏🏽

Top Comment: Colombia! Try the Santa Marta area or split time between there and Cartagena

Best US tropical vacation spots and why???….

Main Post: Best US tropical vacation spots and why???....

Top Comment: This sub loves the Keys but I’m gonna reiterate that the beaches there are not wide, sandy beaches that are super fun to lay out on ... with a few exceptions like Bahia Honda. The Keys are better for activities like boating/snorkeling or just tooling around on a bike or something. I’d second Culebra or somewhere else in PR. If you fly into San Juan you can even go stay in Carolina for nice beaches and slightly lower prices than SJ proper. Some spots in southwest / the gulf coast of Florida could be ok too. Anna Maria Island, Sanibel, something like that for mellow.

Looking for international tropical/beach vacation ideas for 8 adults/4 kids

Main Post:

Hello. Looking to take a family vacation to a tropical/beach vacation at end of May 2024. It would be 8 adults and 4 kids (11, 8, 5 & 1) all flying from Colorado. Two of the couples do not have kids so they get to have a little more freedom.

All of the adults went to Costa Rica 4 years ago to experience the jungle and the beach. We had a blast but it would be fun to go somewhere new.

We’ve all done the Mexico all inclusive resorts, which are great especially with kids. We hope to get some culture experience which the Cancun/Cabo type resorts kind of limit that.

Want to see what ideas the community has.

Top Comment: Belize may be a good fit. You can fly into Belize City and then take the ferry or short plane ride over to Ambergis Caye. There are plenty of activities such as Mayan ruins, cave tubing, butterfly and iguana farms. The Belizians are amazing people.

Tropical vacation ideas for Late July/Early August?

Main Post:

Hi! I’m looking for ideas for a tropical beach vacation in late July/Early August. I’m a solo female traveler and would love:

• Hot, sunny weather • Clear, swimmable water • Minimal hurricane or rain risk • Safe for solo female travelers • Preferably a quick flight (less than 6 hours) out of JFK • Not interested in places with high hurricane/rain risk

Any suggestions would be appreciated :)
